ACI Concrete Finisher Practice Test

Wood hand floats are a gentle finishing tool best used when the concrete is very plastic, so the surface can be leveled and cream can rise without being overly compacted. This makes them well suited to non air-entrained or high slump mixes, where there’s plenty of paste at the surface and you want a light touch that doesn’t seal the surface too quickly or push around aggregates. In air-entrained or low slump mixes, finishing with a wood float can compress the surface or drag on stiffness, potentially obscuring the tiny air voids or creating an overly smooth surface prematurely. Fast-setting concretes leave less time to work and often require quicker, more aggressive finishing methods.
